Holiness Without Vengeance
Samuel is dead, princes are breath, merchants boast in their beauty, and wealthy men rage as though their table and sword could preserve them. Yet the Lord remains: He makes heaven and earth, lifts up the bowed down, and brings proud strength to nothing. Therefore the servant of God must not seize by force what God has not given, nor repay evil with evil, nor trust in rank, wealth, or opportunity.
David had reason to strike: first against Nabal’s contempt, then against Saul’s murderous pursuit. But he was restrained from bloodguilt and spared the one who hunted him. In this he feared God more than he honored passion. As Chrysostom says, David showed wisdom, “and yet spared him.” The psalm teaches why: help is not in princes, nor safety in our own hand, but in the Maker of all. Tyrus glittered with cargo, skill, and fame; in an hour her glory became a lament. So also every proud heart that says, I am full and need nothing, is already near its fall.
For this reason Paul does not bid us admire holiness, but do it. Clement cites his charge: “let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” Grief according to God must not end in words; it must bear fruit in repentance, zeal, clearing away sin, and amendment of life. If wrath rises in you, cleanse it. If greed has ruled you, cut it off by generosity. If your tongue is sharp, bridle it. The world’s splendor passes; the fear of God endures unto life.
“Would you see wisdom 1 Samuel 26:5-12 and not flattery, that of David, how he gat Saul into his power, and yet spared him?”
— John Chrysostom, Homilies on Philippians
“Hence Paul speaks against people who are like those I have mentioned, saying: "You have then these promises, beloved; let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."”
— Clement of Alexandria
