Lots and Refuge
The land is divided by lot, and the cities of refuge are appointed by command. In both, we are taught that life under God is not ruled by grasping but by obedience. Each tribe receives its portion; no man seizes what seems best in his own eyes. Even Simeon is placed where God appoints, “for he dwelt in the midst of Judah.” Thus the people must learn contentment, peace with their brothers, and reverence for the order God gives.
Yet the same Lord who sets boundaries also opens refuge. He does not treat bloodshed lightly, nor does He leave the manslayer without a place to flee. Judgment and mercy stand together. The one who has done harm must arise, leave his place, enter the appointed city, and remain there. Refuge is not found by excuses but by coming under God’s ordinance.
Joshua, who leads the people into their inheritance, also foreshadows a greater entrance. As Justin says, “and as he, not Moses, led the people into the Holy Land, and as he distributed it by lot to those who entered along with him, so also Jesus the Christ will turn again the dispersion of the people, and will distribute the good land to each one, though not in the same manner.” Therefore let no one boast as though he had secured his own portion. What we receive, we receive from the Lord; where we must flee, we flee by His mercy.
So then, do not live carelessly with your brother, nor covet another’s place, nor delay repentance when you have done wrong. Keep within the peace of the church, seek refuge in Christ by confession and amendment of life, and wait steadfastly for the inheritance that He Himself will give.
“For Simeon did not obtain an inheritance like the other tribes, for he dwelt in the midst of Judah.”

For Reflection & Discussion
Where have you been grasping for a place, honor, or possession not given to you, and what concrete act of contentment will you practice today instead?
Is there someone you have harmed by word or deed; when will you go to confess it plainly and make restitution as far as you are able?
What rule of obedience will you keep this week to remain within Christ’s refuge—set hours of prayer, fasting, guarding your tongue, or giving alms to one in need?
