Clean Hands, Loyal Hearts

The Lord who dwells in Zion is not mocked by outward nearness. His name is great, He breaks the bow, He brings down the stouthearted; therefore those who belong to Him must come with clean hands and a loyal heart. Numbers teaches that uncleanness is not brushed aside. It must be dealt with in the way God appoints, and not carelessly delayed: “the man that shall be unclean until the evening shall be purified on the third day, and on the seventh day shall be clean: but if he shall not be purified on the third day, on the seventh day he shall not be clean.” Sin and defilement do not heal by neglect.

Jeremiah shows the grief of God over a people planted by Him yet false in their inward parts. They speak His name, yet cry out against Him by their deeds. This is Judas at the table: near to Christ in body, far from Him in obedience. Origen warns, “for if any one gives place to the devil, Satan enters into him; thus did Judas give place.” Betrayal does not begin with silver in the hand, but with a place yielded in the heart.

Yet in John the Lord does not only expose treachery; He kneels and washes feet. The Master takes the low place and commands His disciples to do the same. This is how His kingdom stands while the weapons of the proud are broken: by humble obedience, patient cleansing, and steadfast love unto the end. Therefore let no one boast in being at the table while refusing the basin and towel. The Lord’s people must be purified, must refuse the devil a foothold, and must serve one another in plain deeds.

“the man that shall be unclean until the evening shall be purified on the third day, and on the seventh day shall be clean: but if he shall not be purified on the third day, on the seventh day he shall not be clean.”

— Cyprian, Epistles

“for if any one gives place to the devil, Satan enters into him; thus did Judas give place, and thus did the devil put it in his heart to betray Jesus, and after the sop, therefore, the devil entered into him.”

— Origen, Commentary on John

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What defilement have you delayed dealing with, and what concrete act of repentance will you do today—confession, restitution, ending a sinful practice, or seeking prayer from the church?

2

Where have you given the devil a place through resentment, greed, secrecy, or lying, and what one door will you shut before nightfall?

3

Whose feet can you wash in deed this week by taking a low place—serving an enemy, visiting the sick, giving to the poor, or doing a hidden task without praise?
