Hear and Follow the Shepherd
Israel stood at the edge of promise, yet the rulers who searched the land taught the people fear instead of obedience. The psalmist nearly stumbled for another reason: he saw the ease of the wicked and envied them. Jeremiah wept because the people had become skilled in falsehood, boasting in wisdom, strength, and riches while they did not know the Lord. In all this, the same trial appears: whether a man will walk by the word of God or by what seems strong, prosperous, and safe before his eyes.
Christ answers this trial plainly. He is the true Shepherd, not a thief; His sheep are not self-led, but obedient. As Tatian records: “John 10:27 And my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they come after me:” To hear Him is not merely to approve His sayings, but to follow where He leads, even when many speak against Him, even when the way passes through hardship.
The wicked may flourish for an hour, and the fearful may seem prudent, but their end is not blessed. Therefore the prophet forbids vain boasting. Clement of Rome joins knowledge of God to a life shaped by His commands: “and let us act according to that which is written... ‘but let him that glories glory in the Lord, in diligently seeking Him, and doing judgment and righteousness’.” Let no one glory in clever speech, full barns, or human force. Let him glory in this: that he knows the Shepherd who laid down His life freely and now calls His own by name. Such knowledge is proved in steadfastness, truth-telling, repentance, and works of mercy.

“and let us act according to that which is written (for the Holy Spirit says, "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, neither let the rich man glory in his riches; but let him that glories glory in the Lord, in diligently seeking Him, and doing judgment and righteousness" [Jeremiah 9:23-24]), being…”

For Reflection & Discussion
What visible boast must you renounce this week—money, status, strength, or cleverness—and what act of judgment and righteousness will you do instead for a neighbor, the poor, or someone under your care?
Where have you followed the fearful crowd rather than the Shepherd’s voice, and what concrete step of obedience will you take today to set that right?
What false or careless words need confession from Jeremiah’s indictment, and from whom must you ask forgiveness or make peace before the day ends?
