At His Appointed Season
God teaches His people not to worship by impulse, but by obedience. Israel kept the Passover at its appointed time, moved only when the cloud lifted, and gathered when the trumpets sounded. Their life was ordered by the command of God, not by appetite, haste, or custom. Tertullian says, “For he says the passover is not to be kept otherwise than according to the law of Moses, on the fourteenth of the month.” The lesson is plain: holy things are not ours to reshape.
Jeremiah stands at the temple gate and strikes the same note. Men may come with sacrifices and still be rebels, if they oppress the stranger, shed innocent blood, and walk after other gods. God did not rescue His people so that they might keep ceremonies while refusing righteousness. He seeks amendment of life. Psalm 71 therefore gives the better sacrifice: a mouth filled with praise, and a life that has leaned on God from youth to old age, not merely at feast days.
In John, the same division appears. Some boast of Abraham, of the temple, of freedom; yet they seek to kill the One who speaks the truth of God. Our Lord shows that slavery is not first political but moral: whoever commits sin is the slave of sin. “And the slave does not remain for ever in the house; but the son remains 47, 48 forever.” Therefore, if we would remain in the house, we must not use holy words as a covering for an unruled life. We must hear Christ, confess our sins, leave them, and walk when He leads. The church is not saved by having rites alone, but by keeping the faith through obedient hearts, clean hands, and steadfast endurance.

“John 8:35 And the slave does not remain for ever in the house; but the son remains 47, 48 forever.”
— Tatian, The Diatessaron
For Reflection & Discussion
What one concrete practice of obedience have you neglected under cover of religious habit—confession, restitution, chastity, almsgiving, truthfulness—and when will you amend it this week?
How will you order your day by God's command rather than by impulse: at what set times will you pray, and what excess or distraction will you cut off so that you can obey?
Is there any dishonest gain, bitter speech, or sinful companionship you must separate from today lest you share in another's sins?
