🎧 What is The Historic Faith?
Lessons

Most Christians know more about the history of their country than they do about the history of Christianity. So what is the historic faith? Well, Paul told Timothy, "The things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."

So if there was a faith that was complete, Paul had taught it to Timothy in front of a lot of witnesses. It wasn't something secret. It was something that most first-century Christians knew. And it wasn't just Paul teaching this faith. It was all of the apostles.

Paul trained Timothy and others so that these men could train the next generation and hand the faith on to them. Paul and the other apostles wanted to make sure that the historic faith would be passed from one generation to the next. Jude wrote, "Contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints."

So the faith was complete by the time the last apostle died. Now, how do we know what the original faith was? Well, obviously, the New Testament is our best witness. It's our only inspired witness to what the historic faith was.

The problem is that today we have around 40,000 different churches, denominations, and sects. And most of them say that they go by just what the Bible teaches. And yet they all teach contradictory things. So who's right? Well, with the early Christian writings, we can go back and see what Christians believed when there was still just one church. We want to know what people believed when the New Testament was finished, right at the end of it. And we have key early Christian writings that were penned by Christian elders within a year or two after the book of Revelation was written.

These church leaders received the faith directly from the apostles and from the disciples of the apostles. We not only can learn what they believed about Christian doctrine, but also about what they believed on how Christians should live. These men lived in the exact same culture as did the apostles, and they spoke the same Korné Greek, and it was their native tongue.

This enables them to give us insights that no modern Bible commentary or Bible encyclopedia can give us. You see, I had imagined that I was a strong, zealous Christian up until the time I read the Witness of the Early Christians.

And then I realized that if I had lived in the church back in those days, I would have been considered a backslidden, really weak Christian. So their writings took me back into the New Testament and made me seriously look at what Jesus Christ and his apostles were saying.

As I said, what I learned radically changed my life. What I learned radically changed my life. What I learned radically changed my life. What I learned radically changed my life. So through these courses, you're going to be learning a lot about the New Testament. You're also going to learn a lot about church history, how the early Christians lived, and what their church services were like. But the whole point is to help you develop an obedient, love-faith relationship with Jesus Christ.
