    Hello THF community,

The Historic Faith updated its platform on July 1st. This brought exciting, new features but also a few bugs for our learners. Our team wants to ensure that you can take full advantage of the new platform and all the bugs are exterminated. So Clark Wray, our IT director, is doing a Q&A Forum on using the new platform. The topic will be technical problems and maximizing the full potential of The Historic Faith learning experience.

Post your question on this board before August 12th or subscribe to see questions posted by others. On August 13th, Clark will respond to as many questions as possible on the discussion board.

    Hello dear brother Wray,

it seems the shortage of posts in this discussion must mean that few people have difficulties with this site. I only wanted to share few minor points.

The first one is navigation on a smartphone. The whole forum works very well on a computer screen. There are many ways to navigate and find what I want. However, on a smartphone the site looks somewhat overloaded. This is partly because all the boxes “popular discussions”, “recent discussions”, “recent replies” and “recently active members” are listed at the bottom after the actual discussion. I know that this is a typical approach websites use these days. My suggestion is to minimize these boxes to the title only. When the user clicks on it, it can expand the contents. I don’t know if I’m the only who thinks this way.

The second point is hardly worth mentioning. When I write a reply and use the text formatting buttons, it removes the cursor from the text field. On a computer this is not such a big issue, but on a smartphone it first hides my touchkeyboard and second scrolls the whole site to fit the now bigger space of the screen. Just a small change that might make things easier for smartphone users.

Thirdly I wanted to say that the site is sometimes a bit slow to build. That may be the case because it has so many features, I don’t know.

Anyhow, The Historic Faith is a great blessing. Before it existed, I have often times wished that the rich contents of Scroll Publishing and other great sources would meet an inviting plattform. You have really built just that and I pray this project will grow more in future.

      Hey Richard,

      1. I really like this idea and I think you are right about the interface being a bit cluttered on mobile. We will take this into consideration next time we do a UI refresh. Collapsible widgets would be a great way to help this out.

      2. I see the issue. It may be a limitation of mobile web. Once we have a native mobile app this functionality should be much smoother.

      3. This is likely caused by a few things, but here is the primary reason pages may load slowly from time to time. We are new to WordPress development and version 1.0 of the new site is a bit bulky. Overtime we hope to cleanup code and plugins to increase performance. We recently added caching and CDN (content delivery network) to increase performance. After sufficient testing we will be installing the latest WordPress updates which are supposed to bring some speed improvements.

      Thanks for these great questions.

<div>I wanted to add something about the mobile layout of the website. I attached two screenshots, one for horizontal layout and one for vertical layout.
    </div><div>

The vertical layout renders the preview box of the Microsoft Word transcript file for each lesson very small. There is a big empty space after the Cooke notice (which is in German), and after that the actual preview box is just as high as the Cookie notice box.

That looks much better on horizontal layout. However the problem with vertical layout throughout the site is that the header is very big. Maybe it could be made a bit smaller in height?

Thanks for your answer in advance.

Hmm. I am not seeing the same thing that you are seeing. It is extra strange that it is in German. Does your device have any language settings set to German? At some point we should probably copy the text into the material section as native text rather than embedded attachments for optimal mobile viewing experience.

Does this happen to every attached material?

I am in Germany, so the German language for the cooke notice is fine. And yes, it happens to every attached material. However, I just noticed that the embedded pdf box looks like in your screenshot for just a short glimpse, until the cookie notice appears and it is shifted.

Notice that in 2018 the cookie notice became almost universally present on websites in Europe. I’m not a lawyer, but it has some legal reasons.

Yeah, that seems to be the issue. Hopefully, a future update will cleanup that formatting issue. There are plugins for chrome that disable those messages on desktop, but not mobile. Just to confirm does it only show up on the pages with embedded materials? We can report it to the theme developer.

          Thanks!

Yes, I haven’t seen the cookie notice anywhere else, only at the material tab. Thanks for looking into this.

On that occasion I allow myself a third post. When I wrote the last post just a few minutes ago, I noticed the text editor (to write replies) had an issue with the line break or paragraph. I cut the end of it, deleted the break/paragraph and pasted the text again after that. However, now there are HTML tags that don’t add up and are shown in my post (“”). I noticed that apparently other users had HTML tag mistakes also. See for example the introductory post in this discussion here: https://thehistoricfaith.com/forums/discussion/covid-19-and-compulsory-vaccinations-2/

I hope you find a way to fix this issue. Thanks again.

I have been noticing the issue. It appears to be a filter issue in the forum text editor. We will add it to our bug tracker and see if we can find a solution. Thanks for pointing out this annoying forum behavior. A quick fix is to simply edit the post and then save the edit without making any changes. That will clear the div tags. Man Shrugging

      Thanks!

I just uploaded my profile photo and had some difficulties to get it right. After the upload I’m asked to crop the picture, but the preview is maybe just a pixel or so in size. Please see the screenshot. In the red circle is a small dot that appears after I upload the file, and which I assume is the cropped preview. When I hover the mouse, the arrow changes as if I could drag the size. But I cannot see any changes, probably because it is too small.

Hey Richard. Thank you for all of your great feedback. We really appreciate you taking the time to submit these issues.

I just resolved the profile image cropping issue. You should now be able to properly crop your profile photo. If you have any issues clear your cookies and cache and restart your browser or computer. Let me know if works!

        Hello brother Wray,

I see it’s working fine now! Very nice feature. Thank you for the quick fix and God bless.
